I'm not sure if I'm asking this in the right forum, but I am preparing to convert two 150g tanks from malawi cichlid tanks to planted tanks. I have not done planted tanks this large and would like to hear some thoughts on fish stock.

I am thinking of doing one as a Congo River theme (not strict biotope) and the other as an Amazon River theme. I am open to any suggestions.

Tank One = Congo Tetra, African Butterfly Fish, Elephant Nose, ??????????

Tank Two = Flagtail Porthole Catfish, Cardinal Tetras, Black Ghost Knife, Angels?, ?????????????

What would you do with a 6' planted tank?

For the Amazon tank I would definitely do Discus, with a large shoal of Cories along with Cardinal Tetras and Rummynose Tetras.

for the amazon tank you should go arowana or maybe a couple of pbass

That'd be pretty sweet. I think I'd probably do something other than Discus though... They're sooo fragile & I just cant imagine dealing with that much tank maintenance. My amazon tank would probably have a Pbass or something as the focus & there would be Pictus cats, Rubbernose Pleco & Otocinclus (3 or 4 for algae control) on the bottom. Thats just me, though...

The african tank has to be Bichirs all the way if you ask me.

I like this suggestion. I really like Cardinals and Rummynose, especially in large groups. I have never kept Discus, and these are tanks that would not get a lot of water changes, so I'm not sure that I could give the Discus what they need. They would look great though.

I would add some cool plecos for sure also.

There is no way that I would keep an Arowana in a 150g tank. Don't pbass get too big for this size tank also?

Either way, this would really limit the types of fish that I could add to the tank - no color - they would all be food.

Howdy,

Really? I have a 55g planted tank with 10 congo tetras and no issues.

Probably depends on what plants you have. I've seen them eradicate vallisneria and crypts

I guess it might also depend on what congo tetras you have? There are several Phenacogrammus species in aquarium trade.
