I must be doing something wrong or he must be sick I dont know I bought a adult FLOWERHORN at my local fish only pet store a month ago they are much more knowledgeable than petco or any of those and put it in a 75G tank with a piranha which did not favorably for the red belly but he was very colorful and have been feeding him goldfish feeders and rosie feeders which he seems to nibble some in half and let the other half float around the tank till I get rid of it. When I first got him he was very colorful and it seems like in the last 2 weeks he's been losing color and I noticed a little bit of fin on his right side is missing today last week I went to menaces and got some river rocks for the bottom of the tank which made the water a little cloudy for a few hours and killed my new filters so not sure if that was smart I'm including some before and current pictures this is my first flower horn so I have no idea what kind he is if I should feed him someone else or what I should do different but please help if you can.

sound like a water quality issue, do you have a close up of the fin thats damaged. he may have fin rot. check your water parameters and make sure your levels are good.

Not at the moment I'll take a picture later but I checked temp last night and it was 70 degrees F. Is there anything I can do to turn the quality around besides water changes? Was the gravel from menards a bad idea or would the stuff at the fish store been better? I normally do around 30-40% weekly water changes

Read the flowerhorn care stickies. Get him off the feeders and onto a good pellet. Temp should be low 80s. Fish looks stressed. Good luck!

The guy at the fish store said if anything could handle being in the same tank as a flower horn it would be a piranha but I tried giving him something called chiclid gold and he doesn't touch it at all just the feeders and now not even them I brought up the water temp once I got home image.jpg
and here's his fin image.jpg so any ideas beyond what's been mentioned?

Yeah, from what I've read on Piranha's, if they can't eat something outright, they'll eat the fins. I think they usually do this when they're babies anyway.

If you want to try to get the FH off feeders a bit more gradually, you could try feeding him raw shrimp and tilapia. Sometimes fish will take to meaty foods quicker than the pellets. Depending on the size he can eat, you could stuff the pellets into those pieces like I do for my larger carnivores. Pieces can also be soaked in Vitachem - I'm not sure if it's a snake oil or not, but I do it for my fish at least once a week.

Everyone else has good points though:
1. test the water
2. Up the temp to 75-78
3. Remove the Piranha
4. Try to get him on a healthier diet

Good luck! Hope everything works out for you

No I separated the piranha a while ago and he was fine when they got put in different tanks it was the flower horn that was killing the piranha I wasn't sure the red belly would make it
