Not sure that this is the correct forum, but seem as acurate as any.

These things are always sold at the LFS's around here as the general term freshwater flounder. I think that I got different species every batch.

It looks like a hog choker, they are native to the coastal and inland waters of the USA, they need some salt in the water or at least some calcium chloride. Add about a table spoon per gallon of marine aquarium salt, they feed best on small live food, they are really soles and not flounder so they do not have the huge mouth of a flounder. I've raised them to 10" in slightly salted water, live daphnia, tiny earth worms, or trout worms work well, calcium chloride is good for them if you have fish that are sensitive to sodium chloride. Other fish tend to out feed them and can cause them to starve slowly, they like very fine sand and mine always liked to perch on large smooth rounded stones as well. They will stick to the glass as well, all in all they are very cool fish....

What would be a good place to get calcium chloride? or Can I just powder up some shells or plaster of paris?

I use the marine salt @ 1 tblsp/ gallon. They sell bags of it in just about every LFS and can be purchased at the chain's Petsmart, Petco, Walmart . . .

Shells and plaster of Paris are not calcium chloride, right now the only source i have of calcium chloride is the stuff they use to dry the air in closets, I'm not sure about how pure it is but so far it has worked quite well and the calcium is bio available. marine aquariums shops might have it as it is sometimes added to marine aquariums.

your best bet is marine aquarium salt, it has all the other minerals you need as well as salt.
