After watching the tank at the LFS it was certain the two had paired up and was pushing the rest to a corner so I brought them home. After a bit of searching it seems like there's some controversy with this variant so if anyone can list the differences it would be awesome!

Thanks in advance.

G. Surinamensis / G. Altifrons

Short vid of the pair cause pictures aren't so great.

With that tiny midlateral spot, I'm not sure why there would be any controversy about them not being altifrons?

after a night of constant googling/searching it ended up with mixed descriptions.

Google confuses more than it helps when it come to ID on a geo. That is 100% altifons and beautiful at that.

Found another picture I.D. that states G. Altifrons 'manaus'...

You have to be careful labeling something with a collection point if you are unsure of collection. The altifeons complex has many varients and can be difficult to ID visually. I would just stick to calling it G. altifrons.

+1. I see people on MFK do this all the time with things like Geophagus and severums. Unless the collection point has specific traits that haven't been seen anywhere else, it's not good to assume your fish is from a certain collection point just based on things like color or similar appearance.

Your fish are definitely altifrons. They are often sold as G. surinamensis in the hobby because it has pretty much become a blanket name for geos in the pet store trade, but they aren't surinamensis.

Sounds good, I didn't know that it was a collection point. I don't like using collection points unless they were direct imports.

Thanks for all the help guys!
