I got this stingray and was told it was a hystrix but after reading about the hystrix I'm not so sure anymore.
I didn't even know about hystrix before acquiring this one I had mostly researched the more common ones I guess.
Would be great if maybe someone knew what species he is so I can make sure I have the right housing for him.

Oh also is it possible to tell if this is a male or female it wont show its belly and I'm not totally sure but I know females get bigger

Thank you I will look those up some more then to make sure he lives a happy life.

No problem.

This is a very variably patterned Stingray, though the one thing that defines this species is the mask around the breathing hole (spiracle).
Potamotrygon Orbignyi is a large species given the space to grow, males often grow to a disc size of 18" with females closer to 24-26" disc, very similar size to common Motoro.
It is a wide spread species throughout Amazona and the most common ray incorrectly labeled as Hystrix. It is an easy species to raise though you are going to need a much larger tank than you may have budgeted for....hopefully not!

Good luck with your new ray, it is very pretty.

Atm I have a 8x2x2 and planning to make a 15x4x3 in the future I like big fish and plan on having huge tanks.
I'm buying a new home soon and the selling point will be room for my fish lol

Will be fine in your current tank for 2 maybe 3 years, the 15 footer sounds an exciting prospect I must say.

All the best with it!

What size it your ray? Hard to see the angle in your first picture, but it looks like it may be a female.
