Hey Guys

This guy from my country is selling 4 of the SH on the photos below...

They are supposed to be about 10"

Is is Channa Marulius (cobra) or Channa Marulioides (Emperor)??

Think its marulioides, too

Hi Guys

Thanx for your answers... I have been searching the net almost the whole day to sort the question out myself.

Talked to the guys whos selling the fishes - he called them Malaysian Snakeheads. Ch. Marulius does not live in malaysia and Indonesia - but Ch. Marulioides does.

Also until now I thought that it was only Ch. Marulius who has the "Bullseye" spot on the tail - but it seems that some species of Ch. Marulioides also have the tail-spot... (one example is here: http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/Snakehead_circ_1251/html/channa_marulioides.html)

Finally from looking at a lot of pictures it seems that the Marulius is slightly longer and slender (eel-like) than Marulioides. The fish on the pictures seems more "blocky" and thick to me...

So my guess would actually be Ch. Marulioides aswell (sorry Tropheus ;))

Please correct me if I´m wrong in the above...

Cheers,
Peter

no worries mate you are completely correct , marulioides also can have tail spot , and if from Malaysia then it is 100% maruliodes , marulius is generally longer although hard to tell unless you have two side by side , some maruliodes are longish also , you can usually tell by the head maruliodes generally has much shorter head from nose to gills

glad you got it pinned down

Tropheus:

Yeah got one home yesterday... picked the smallest of the buch.. he´s around 10"... he got at little beat-up when we loaded him.. fled onto the floor and stuff

I´ll post some pics when he´s not hiding anymore

cheers,
Peter
