i would like to keep some medium light plants, that wouldn't require CO2 and get pretty decent growth. Currently I have a 20 gallon long tank with sand subtrate, with 4x13W CFLs under the original canopy painted white for reflection. A pretty basic DIY setup but I have been able to keep high growth and keep my tank green with some fairly easy plants like corkscrew vals, wysteria, and even some red plants (even though not very well with those). I am setting up another planted tank now, which is (what I thought was a 40 gallon), but I would like it to have somewhat of a better lighting environment. I would like to keep a decent cost/benefit balance as well as keep it aesthetically pleasing as it's now in the middle of the living room space. So, I wouldn't want two shop lights hanging over it that is.

What would you guys recommend? My immediate thought was to modify the original canopy and put in 4x23W CFLs. That would be 92W. What do you think about that? I also looked at some Hagen GLO fixtures but I'm not sure what I need to get. It looked to me that the most you can get with a T5 Hagen GLO fixture is 2x39W? Or am I missing something?

Uh oh, and I just remembered that the light that's above the tank now says 24 on it, which makes me think the tank is actually 30" long, which would make it a 29 gallon and not 40?? Hmm.... is that right? It was my mother in law's, so she said it was 40 but I guess maybe it really wasn't?

Basically, any suggestions you have will be appreciated.

Thanks!
