Ok, I need some suggestions on what to do here and I am kind of a novice with angels. Currently in my 55 I have 2 angels and 2 blood parrots. They are doing fine together but I want to move the parrots to my 75 and do a nice looking angel tank with roughly 5 angles. The trouble is I didn't realize when I got my current angels how aggressive they can be. My angels are one large marble looking angel and a medium sized more natural looking one. I had 2 smaller ones already in the tank and the medium sized one keeps going after any other angel in the tank and harassing it until I have to remove it from the tank. I don't know if the 2 are pairing up but they have not bred or anything. Anyway, do you think there is any chance of getting my dream of 5 angels in my 55 or will these 2 never allow it? Or should I keep the 2 and add some other fish to fill out the tank? I don't really want my 55 to have just 2 angels in it. If I add 3 larger ones at once would it disperse the aggression? I love the beauty and personality of angelfish but I did not know how mean they can be!

Angels are cichlids & can be rough on each other. I ran into the same problem as you, I tried 6 in a 55 and soon ended up with one angel pinning the rest up in the corner of one tank.

You have a couple options to try, I'm not sure either will work out as you hope in a 55. Rehome the angles you have & start over with a group of 5-6 juvies and grow them out together. Hopefully they will work out their pecking order issues while young. This does present a problem though & that is you're likely to get a pair out of the bunch and then the bullying will start again. You could also try to buy angels of the same size or larger - shoot for a max of five - and hope that over time the pecking order will work itself out.

BTW, I got a group of 7 juvies in March off Aquabid. I'm growing them out in a 90gal & its working alot better. The width of the 90 allows for more space to establish territories.

Hmmm.. Thanks for the insight. Sounds like the 55 definitely did not work for you! Well, I have to keep my big marble because he is a real stunner IMO. He's not the aggressor, maybe because he knows he's king of the pack. It's the number 2 guy who's doing most of the fighting. I'll let you know what I end up doing. Thanks.

You could move the marble to another tank, grow out a group of juvies and add the marble back after they have grown out. Pecking order will be established and he will now be the new guy on the defensive.

Angel often tend to pick on smaller fish such as neon tetra and platties, so it the smaller pair angel fish may have bean to small. If u want to keep your original pair of angels I would recommend getting three to four angel fish close to the same size. And if their is still a bit of aggression I would put a 5 or so rummy nose tetras in to destract them from each other .
