About 3 months ago I went to go buy a festea and ended up with 3 of them. This is my first Festea and my first cichlid. I have the 3 housed in my 55g and they are thriving together! I realize that I am playing with fire and need some suggestions. I believe to have 2 female and 1 male but please verify. I have become attached to all 3 but I know there will be issues as they mature and I do not have room to try and get a breeding pair in my 135g. It will be at least 3 months before I move and have more tank space, I plan to get a 240g or larger. My primary questions I guess are when should I sale 2 of them and what are their sex?

Also how do I get this video inserted in my thread??

At that size, I think you can vent them. Get some buckets, some towels and a magnifying glass. Males have oo anal and breeding pores. Females have the oO pores. The bigger hole is where the eggs come from.

Nice description! So your telling me I have to look at there pooper?!!

It's probably the most accurate way to do it. Since they won't be obvious until they're much bigger. It's simple but you have to be careful, that's all.

I'll give it a try and thank you for help. What about my other question? How long do I have about before they don't get along anymore?

Mine are constantly trying to kill each other in a 120 gal since they were like 1" so I'd say you're on borrowed time since the day you brought them home. Festae seem to be notorious for hating their own kind.

In my case they have only killed one out of 7 in about 4 months. You might just be lucky and manage to keep the 3 in the 55 for some more time, but keep a divider (and hospital tank) ready.

If you're going to vent the fish, make sure you hold the fish in the net or a towel. Then use the magnifying glass with proper lighting to see. Put the fish back in some water every 30 seconds or so if you're taking too long to see it. As for the aggression, every fish is different. I have just started keeping Festae myself and mine are only 1 1/2 inches big. They're already showing aggression to each other when it's feeding time. Judging from yours, they seem to get along pretty well. I think rule of thumb is that once most cichlids hits sexual maturity, they act out. How big are yours exactly?

Thanks but how do I do that?? I tried the you Tube button on menu but it didn't work correctly

Do not link the entire url address to youtube, just copy the section at the end of the url AFTER "v=" and paste that in between the text the youtube button gives you. You may have go into editor mode if that doesn't work (doesn't on my PC) To go into editor mode, click on the icon to the right of the page when composing a post, he icon looks like this ==> "a/A"

Hope that helps :)
You pasted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gKStlHpY1A
You need to paste just this after clicking the icon: 6gKStlHpY1A
