I just bought about 80lbs of live rock. I bought it and took it home in some tubs and havent been able to put it in my tank yet. I have just been keeping it in tubs with heaters to keep it as alive as possible. I cant put it in my tank until tommorow. I was looking at it today and noticed stuff all over the surface of the water. I didnt think much but looked at it closer later and noticed it looks like worms. It looks like pudgy little tan things. There are some big and fat ones and some skinny ones. They have little legs all over them. They are obviously dead now but what are they and were they valuable. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ryan

I would never put that much rock into an established tank, unless taking it from a fully-established reef tank. You must keep it in the vat w/a powerhead for some time. Keep testing the water, until it is cycled (like any other tank). Once the ammonia/nitrite is 0, you can put it into your main tank. I'd so 100% WC on it, if it gets too high (at least 1x/week). You can scrub off the dead stuff as it is curing.

This belongs in the SW forum, BTW.

The tank im putting it in isnt established. Im setting it up. Im getting the salt tommorow. I have everything else. I would have waited to get it after I mixed the water but he gave me a deal I couldnt say no to.

Sounds like a huge infestation of bristleworms......do they look furry?

Gotcha. Then just keep it covered w/marine SG water & a powerhead for circulation. You can mix the salt in the new tank, add the rock & let it cure totally in there. There will be some die-off. If you think there are pests in them, I HIGHLY suggest a FW dip for all of it.

If you don't have any salt yet, you've done this all backwards then & the LR will be re-curing for sure. Just try to keep it wet w/newspaper but it really should have been dipped in SW.

Well I dont really know what they are. Here are some pics for an idea. I want to try and figure it out because I dont want to kill it off if it isnt a pest. The rock is in saltwater right now. He gave it to me in tubs with it submerged in SW and that is why I am keeping it in the tubs.
