Hello there! I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to ID my bichir who is currently about 6 inches. The LFS had him labeled as an ornate but I have sneaking suspicion that he is not :grinno:

Here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure. Also attached is a photo of him chomping on my red tail cat purchased due to a momentary lapse of judgement. Was going to bring him back to the store the next day but apparently my bichir wanted him gone immediately. Are bichirs normally this aggressive? I know anything that can fit into his mouth is fair game but not even half the cat's head fit in his mouth. He carried it around the tank with him like a dog that's gotten a hold of something from the trash when I tried knocking it out his mouth. It took an offering of beef heart to get him to spit it out =[

The tank is a 60 gallon which is also home to 4 balas, a prochilodus, a ghost knife, and a pleco. They are awaiting transplant to a 200 gallon that I am currently planning.

He looks a lot like my endli x ansorgii hybrid. Same head shape as well. So that's what I would say but wait for a confirmation from Hao or Kevin

bichirs are capable killing fish that can fit it's mouth, so it wasnt a surprise that it was able to chomp that small red tail catfish

yeah that's definitely not an ornate hahahah its definitely an endlicheri but im not sure if its a hybrid or not, since i only keep upper jaw bichirs

from what i know, endlis are actually known to eat other bichirs too because of how big the mouth of lower jaw species have.

also, if you plan on keeping him, its recommended that you take the pleco out because the pleco will try and attack your bichir and suck out the slime coat off.

as for your other stock, it really depends on the size and aggression. its more of a hit and miss.

hope this helps man

Washed out Endlicheri. Looks good and wow last pics is monster lol. Did the rtc survive? I kept my endli with a small delhezi that could've been eaten but they got along great.

they will be very aggressive unless they are well fed like most fish if you keep their bellies full they wont go after others. but endli's are very aggressive eaters they might accidentally kill a fish during feeding time. if you dont want it killing your other fish dont feed feeders and keep it full. and i agree with the removal of the pleco because they just make waste unless you really like it then get the 200 and leave it in the tank it is in now. hope this helps

Thanks! I will keep an eye on the pleco for any skin sucking :). He doesn't bother my balas at all but he seems very interested in the ghost knife. Hopefully the knife is smart enough to stay away ( probably not because he's the friendliest fish in the world ).

The red tail cat unfortunately did not survive :(. Part of me thinks the bichir just got annoyed the cat was hanging around and crawling all over him lol.

Yes and here I was worrying about everyone else in the tank. Turns out the bichir is the one to keep an eye on.

Endlis are one of the biggest species right? Picking out a 200gal soon and am hoping it is enough? Although I'm fairly certain I'll end up upgrading to a 300+ eventually much to my boyfriends dismay lol.

Is it a good idea to use a power head with a poop machine like polys? Currently running an eheim 2217 for the 60 thinking I could use a little more gph?
