im building an african tank for my mom, and she only has enough room for a 20gal. she said she wanted some cichlids that are colorful. so i figured african was the way to go. i was thinking some victorians? what are your opinions?

In short, you're SOL for color.

First of all, most cichlids (not just Africans) need bigger tanks than a 20g. However your options aren't totally shot if you are dead set on Africans. Tanganyikan shelldwellers aren't very colorful (in comparison to Lake Malawi mbuna), but what they lack in color they make up for it in behavior and attitude.

I would go for shelldwellers if i were you. I have a several golden ocellotus. They are some of the coolest fish. They are also very colorfull.

as long as you don't have the 20g tall their are few but existing options. Read this thread.

Also don't be stupid and try to overfilter to streatch your capasity.

Also a small school of neon tetra won't hurt 5 or maybe 7 depending on the size of the other fish. If you keep the chiclids by itself.

That makes a lot of color!

Also how much is your mom willing to upkeep the tank. If she is looking to be active I suggest some simple plantings. The tank looks much prettier with live plants and helps you with your nitrogen based pollutants.
