G'day,

ive got a few native fish in my tank aswell as a few cichlids (temp fish, ill get them out as soon as i can but i need a bigger net.) the natives are an 7' fork tailed catfish and 2 aussie bass , both around 4"give or take.

Here is a list of their strange behavier-

1. they all huddle together in the corner, only ocasionaly moving around the tank and then returning to the same corner.

2.the catfish keeps poking his head out of the water, sometimes even using his tail to thrust him up further, nearly hitting the lid, none of the other fish do this.

i no your thinking hes doing this to get out becouse of a possible lack of oxygen/contamination/poor water but i can tell you none of these are present.

My guess is these behaviors are due to stress as i had no choise but to move the tank to another room for 2 days as the house was having new carpet
and then moving the tank back in to the room, this creating sloshing of the water and then re setting up rocks, plants etc and that stresses them out too.

The tank is just over 35g (not big enough i know but it will do for now) i have one big ass cannister filter as well as a few airstones.

Another thing i thought id ask, are sunken branches from a lake ok for use in the aquerium? im not really worried to be honest, the spot that i got them from was secluded, (no trash or noticable polutants near te water) and the water was nice and clear. i boiled and scrubbed them in my bathtub before use but just thought id ask for opinions.

cheers-

Dazz

just thought id add that the tank is 45g, mayber a bit more (cant remember exactly) not 35, thats was a type-o

the huddling sounds like they are stressed. in my experience, the best hiding places will conceal them when viewed from above, but leave the sides open. the cat popping his head up... could be a stress behavior, maybe not. I have no idea.
pond/stream wood works fine. many boil or bleach it first. I just let mine bake in the sun for a few days. in general, the older the better since some woods have toxins in their sap.

seems like your tank might be a little small for them, i had a 7" yellow perch in a 55 and even he was a bit stressed from the size. I'd upgrade to a 55-90 and maybe seperate the natives from the cichlids just to ease a bit of tension
