Hi everyone, just started here and am planning to build a 300 gallon plywood aquarium. Are there any catfish similar to the red-tail or tiger shovelnose that can go into this size tank? I've had both in a 75, not at the same time, when I was younger but had to give them up when to they got too big. Thanks for the help.

There are like planiceps and brachyplatystoma. Not rain your parade but what happens when the fish need more swimming space?

Lima shovelnose sound perfect for you, sizewise and and also from the perspective of being active...or at least being visible. :)

But I couldn't live with myself if I didn't suggest a Jelly Cat, Lophiosilurus apurensis (but until recently it was Cephalosilurus). If you can live with a tank containing a single large and mostly-inactive fish, but which will definitely have a "Wow!" factor as it grows, you'll love it.

Size: approaching 2 feet or slightly more, but very slow-moving and ambush-lurking so doesn't need as much space as that size implies.

Personality: "Get off my lawn!"

Tankmates: Anything too big to swallow...or in other words: almost nothing, especially in that size tank.

Hardiness: Well, if your idea of a water change consists of a couple trips back and forth to the bathroom with a 2-gallon bucket once per month, you don't want this fish. It eats a lot...and poops a lot...and you need to change the water...a lot. Otherwise, they are easy to keep, easy to switch to a pellet diet or any other carnivorous diet, easy to observe if the tank is set up to allow that.

Plenty of threads on here about this fish; do a search and you'll find them. Plenty of good videos from thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter and other keepers.

And, if it matters to you...you'll probably be the only kid on your block who has one! :)

Thanks guys, you're really helping me out
BTW I was thinking of using 1"plywood and 3/4" tempered glass with pond shield. Is that ok and what else would I need?
