i tested my tank the other day b/c i noticed my arowana and bass were moving their jaw to breathe, sort of gasping

and their gills were moving a LITTLE faster then normal

the test showed that the nitrates were in the 40 ppm

and the nitrites werent in the stress, but in the caution field

any easy tips on keeping those levels down?, this is probably a common problem right?

Welcome to MFK!!!

Just because some test strip says it's not in the stress level doesn't mean to follow this as a strict rule. If your fish are stressing...DO A WATER CHANGE!!!

These large-growing riverine species are intolerant of drops in water quality. It's a good idea to schedule a couple of 30-50% waterchanges/gravel washes twice a week.

I agree with Oddball. Wouldnt be a bad idea to invest in a decent test kit as well. Best thing to do though is do water changes, keeps your water quality high and your fish happy.

Purigen will help remove nitrates, if you have space for a small pack in your filter.
