Help with noise from my DIY Canister filter

I have created this canister from the ideas of Nyquil Junkie and his post at http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208356&highlight=diy+canister+filter

I made it with, 3 foot of 4 inch PVC and i have a 585 g/hr Quite-one 2200 submersible pump supplying the water from the tank.

The problem is when i run the filter it has a loud splashing sound coming from the inside on the filter. i have the intake from the tank to the filter submerged to the bottom of the PVC pipe.

The loud noise seems to be coming from the return to the tank.

Any ideas??

This Filter is also in my room where i sleep and its very hard to sleep with all the noise going on. LOL

Can you make the pipe going back into the tank below the surface?
Since the canister is open top you shouldn't get any air lock problems

let the return water flow in above the water surface but through an open ended sock made of stabil cloth or plastic that touches the water surface
