I have a problem with pH in y 150 gallon tank. The pH in the tank is at an 8.4. So I went out and bought some pH reducer and it has done no good at lowering the pH at all. I am going to try a teracata pot in the tank. I also was going to try buying distilled water, but if any one has any ideas for safely lowering my pH that would be great.
( by the way my tap water pH is 8.5)
thanks

I'm no expert on PH but I don't think your tap water should be that high. What kind of test kit are you using? What PH are you trying to get and what is your setup (substrate). Are you using crushed coral?

If your tap is that high ;) You will not likely bring it down with pH reducers ;) The buffers will bounce it back up.. Which is much worse for your fish.

I agree why are you trying to lower?

You can try some driftwood. I find that it keeps my ph pretty stable, and my fish love it. I put some in all of my tanks and the ph dropped a bit. Using the ph down is usually not a good idea, considering the fact that something you have in your tank (whether it's the tap water, or coral, or something) is boosting it back up. Ph fluctuations like that can be detrimental to your fish's health, and usually do more harm than good.

yes, what kind of test are you using? it maybe faulty or expired. I would not recommend using distilled water because they are lacking minerals that the fish need.

Peat moss in you filter will also reduce the Ph, but most fish can adjust to your level if it is consistant.

Unless you really understand the chemistry of whats involved,do not mess with the Ph.Playing with the water chemistry is the surest way to kill your fish,if you dont know what you are doing.
What kind of fish are in the tank?

Whenever you talk about adjusting PH and not mention the hardness of the water (buffer capacity), it's a lot like telling a story about a crash and not mentioning speed involved.

I did a test on the water and it is very hard so i might have to get an RO and treat the water with trace elements, I did have fish in it, they have all gone on to a better place so I am working on a clean slate
I will more than likely have angels and various barbs
thanks again for your help
