i have a 75 gallon with cichlids and run a emperor 400 but i'm looking at moving to either a rena xp3 or fluval 405 from the research i've done so far but i'm new to canisters and was hoping for exp input so far i dont like the fact that you cant call hagen just email them, where as rena have support number. Thx

eheim classics are always really good canisters. but the xp3 and 405 are good choices.

why do you need to use another filter?is the one you are using now not keeping the water clean or do you just want another filter

The current filter has actually stopped running 2 times on me already and once cleaned it runs again (and its not really dirty when cleaned). I know i could try replacing the impeller but i thought if canisters were alot better i would move up, the one draw back i see to canister is the posibality of leaking on the floor which would not be a good thing.

Id go with the fx5 but from what iv heard you can't go wrong with your other two options. Though I would suggest you get an HOB filter just as a back up and for flow. I would suggest an AC110.

On a 75g your money would be best spent on a AC110 HOB. With the ac you'll be able to easily clean frequently and it will do a better job with mech filtration.

ditto ditto ditto!

I run to AC110's on my 72BF & it does great. excellent water flow & powerful. but I must admit, the extention tube was not deep enough. so with one unit I DIY the extention with pvc & made a tee so I can have 2inlets left & right (have to drill/drommel slots in the end pts just b-4 the endcaps). works great, sucks up all the heavier poop at the bottom, the other unit I use the given extention tube so that sucks up the floating stuff.

I actually dislike canisters a lot. tho I only had a fluval204 unit - I like the ease of cleaning of the AC's vs canisters + the fluvals - it it has the coiled ridged tubings, crud will get stuck in it so you also have to flush it out each time cleaning.

With the AC's you get great performance & can clean them alternatively w/o losing bio effectivenes..

try www.kensfish.com he has very good prices on most of his products/flake food/heaters/meds so you can combine your order + his shipping costs are very modest too!

good luck!
