I am a new member having registered today. I am planning new construction of a small office building. The lobby will have a 7 foot wall which is visible as one enters the front door which I figure is perfect for up to a 210 gallon tank. Since I've never raised anything of size I am looking for advice as to what species would make an impressive display. Since it will be in such a "public" area do you think timidness is a factor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A community of arowanas and rays will be an impressive display. A couple of large catfishes will also add vibrancy to the tank. Maybe some mid level fast swimmers like silver dollars will also be nice.

Thanks. Have you any idea of numbers of the suggested species (fully grown) that a 210 would support . Also, species of rays? My plan is to pick as many brains as possible while in the planning stages.

Also, if any others have any related suggestions (filtration, lighting, anything) I'd be most appreciative. I feel that I may be able to avoid mistakes by listerning now.

Hiya docjohn, welcome to MFK.
You will haveto avoid a few of the more skittish fish and as much as I hate to say it should probably not go with rays yet as they are notoriously sensitive to water conditions and you say that this is your first excursion into larger fish. They make simple mistakes rather costly.
For your 210g you could keep something like 1 silver arowana, 3 large silver dollars, 1 large flag tail or three pink tail chalceus, 1 spotted synodontis cat, and a royal panaque or a half dozen zebra pelco cats, all without overloading the tank. I think the mix would provide movement and variety as well as the visual impact you seem to be looking for.

Oops maybe rays wasnt such a good idea.. haha sry. Anyway i agree with guppy on the amount of fishes that u should put in but dont forget that if you are going to buy them at juvenile stages so the tank might look a little empty at the beginning. For filtration for such a large tank i would go with custom sumps if you have the space. If not cannisters would be efficient as well. For lighting normal fluorescent lighting or t5 lighting depending on the height of your tank and whether u want any plants in it.

Since this is your first time, I would go with some Koi, plecos, channel cats and a soft shell turtle or two.

Be sure to post some pictures, and if you ever need opinions or advice this is the place to be!

Thanks for the help. Guppy, thanks especially for the pix. Images are always a big help. Gr8, I am cetainly looking forward to sharing via this site.

I know your looking for something big but if you want a colorful jaw dropping display tank try asst african cichlids. I built a 180gal display tank at the lfs i use to work for with nothing but adult male peacocks and everybody was in awe. I turned a lot of saltwater customers back to the fresh side.
