Hi guys im really new to sunfish so i have some questions i hope ya'll can help out. There are some new pumpkinseed sunfish that arrived from thailand. I think these are captive bred already and are more accustomed to higher temps. These guys are about 3 inches and all really red with blue streaks all over the body. Really nice vibrant colors... So im planning to get eight pcs and put them in a hundred gallon tank all for themselves. Will that space be sufficient? I also wanna know if these guys are aggressive towards other fish or just themselves? I hope someone can share some info on this as soon as possible coz ill be getting the fish in a few hours or so. Thank you!

unless you ordered a million 100 gallons should be
plenty cause they dont get much bigger then 6"

iv heard 55 gallon for two is good 4-5 in a 100 should be great!

they are mean angry little fish who like to have space, they will fight with each other but nothing to bad as long as you have things to break up line of sight...they do get larger than 6 inches..closer to a foot.

they will eat smaller fish as well, had one in my 40g for a while and he ate a few baby sculpin before he found another home.

post some pics they are lovely little fish!

yup im uploading the pics as we speak... ya i was alittle apprehensive on getting more than eight because of their aggression.
a)so a species tank will be ok right without them killing each other?
b)are they gonna be ok with rocks driftwood and maybe some plastic plants? because the tank lighting and substrate were not designed for plant growth..
c)will their vibrant colors stay until they grow to about 6 inches or will it fade off?
d)should i choose a specific number of males to females? and how do you identify them?

sorry for the list of questions am really appreciating the answers... im getting the fish in about 3 hours..

here they are.. ive been searching online and found long eared sunfish that look like these as well, but my importer told me these are really pumpkinseeds... correct me if im wrong....

nobody? haha i got them already they are gorgeous one of the most vibrant freshwater fish ive seen.. i hope you guys can still answer my questions as they are still in a quarantine tank for about a day or two as i fix their 100galon permanent home, so fare they are in a 35 gallon, 8 pcs, so far no aggression is seen, some of the big guys just square off and dance in circles but no nipping yet.

They are beautiful, but definitely not pure - very likely hybrids, who knows of what.
They are native here, and I have a pair. They will fight constantly, so you need a lot of space, and a lot of decor to break up the open water a little. They eat pretty much anything.

ok, ill keep that in mind fwprawn. do you think the colors in these guys will be the same as they grow up? i know they are most likely hybrids, but with your experience, do small pumpkinseeds retain their color and pattern as they grow? thanks!

No, I don't think so. My honest guess is that they were fed a special diet high in coloring agents - you never know these days, with what the Thais are doing with fish, and even chemically inducing variegation in rare plants.
My guess is that they will look about the same.
Real Pumpkinseeds definitely hold their color as they grow - the females are more drab, but still beautiful. You can look up my photo of my young (2 1/2 - 3 inch) male here, for comparison.

yeah even boys become girls there... great, ill do check out your fish for sure, thank you! gotta research more on these sunfish.. gonna read up on posts here.. appreciate the help sir!
