A friend of mine has 10ish red devils. They are all around 2 inches. Some are the normal shades or light redish but some more like they have black stripes and are more white, one almost a blueish shade, contemplating this one. Anyways, I am trying to find a male, besides looking for longer fins or some small hump, is there any good way to know for sure? Or am I better off selection the coolest looking or most dominant?

10 red devils in the same tank? i hope theres no decor... otherwise your friend will be watching another episode of "the final countdown."

the hump, but it will be hard to see at 2 inches. he's your friend, why not just pick one and when they all grow up, ask for a trade in if he has a male and you dont?

I would but the rest will be gone by then. I may just grab a couple, the weird color one for sure and another large one.

Your on the right path. Grab acouple and you'll have to grow them out. Dominent one has a chance of being female, but more of being a male. GL

Drop your auratus in the tank with my Jag.... by the time we get it back out, it will plum wore out ...... or dead
My experience with the auratus has been that they are small quick and mean.
I had a 3" given to me a few years back because it was killing every thing in the tank it was in, dropped it in to my convict tank for a few days and my cons just beat the crap out of it. Anyway, the friend that brought it to me came over seen what the con's were doing to it took it back home to his tank where it has lived in peace ever seance.
Don't know if this helps, just sharing.
