I'm thinking of getting sand I was wondering what tyPe of sand to use and also how to clean it before I put it in and also if you really need double the filtration

You can use play sand or concrete sand and you can get it at Home Depot. When I switched to sand I kept the filtration the same. You might get some sand in the filter at first.
To rince the sand I put it in a very large bucket and while im running water into it i mix it around with my hands to stir it up and when its full of water i pour the water out and repeat the process until the water is clear.

Although I have never used pool filter sand, I have heard a lot of good things about it. I use play or concrete sand mostly because its the cheapest stuff and much better than aquarium gravel.
Pool filter sand is a better option IMO. It's a little bit more expensive, but you barely have to rinse it to clean it. Play sand can take FOREVER to clean lol.
rocksI'll recommend the PFS over play sand too, not only does it rinse clean much quicker but it tends to be much heavier and denser than play sand which means that it won't get stirred up or clouded as easily. I keep my filter intakes at least 4" above my sand bed and never had any issues with getting sucked up.
