Hello all,
I have just joined up here, but I've always referred to this site for many questions. My boyfriend and I are pretty serious about our cichlids and try our best to learn everything we can about them. I currently have a 120 gal. Tank with a canister filter for my now six fish. Today we had to take our two Jewel cichlids back to the fish store we bought them about five months ago from. They were tiny so you couldn't tell what sex they were. We bought them and a few others and had them all in a 30 gal for a little while. So they all started out together except Pearl my big Gold Severum. Anyway, the last few days they started turning a brilliant red and bonding unlike normal and they kept running everyone else off from this particular area of the tank. Sadly I found out they would soon breed and I am not set up for all that. So with all that has happened in the last few days and all emotional heartbreak with giving them back, I really would like some honest help with truly trying to sex my other fish just so I have that peace of mind. I'll post pictures as best I can, any info would be greatly appreciated. I have a Gold Severum who will be a year old in July who is about 5 inches, a Green Terror that's about five months old and at about 2 inches or so the same as the Jack Dempsey and Firemouth. The Pink Convict is a little younger and newer to the tank, but fairly close in size. Thank you in advance. 20170425_203934.jpg 20170425_205220.jpg 20170425_205208.jpg 20170425_203915.jpg 20170425_205044.jpg

I think the Jack Dempsey looks like it could be a male. It does have some spangles on its lower gill plate, but not nearly as much as I've seen in most females. How big is it?
From your post it sounds like it is 2in? But 5months old? Did you get it as a wiggler or are you guessing at age? I'm very confused.

The green terror(also 5months old and two inches?) It's tough to tell from that pic. Can you possibly get clearer side pictures of both those?
I'm thinking possible female, but that's just a guess without a better picture to go off of.

The others, someone else will need to chime in.
They are all very nice looking fish.

Thank you MrsE88. I'll try and get more pictures. I tried posting a video with all of them, I'll try again. I got all of them from the fish store here so I do not know actually how old. That's just how long I've had them and they were pretty little when I got them. They are growing pretty good though.
