Help with sexing this carpintis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hard to tell on body shape alone. If ya can, try scooping it out of the tank and taking a pic of the underside of the fish. Essentially what your looking for it the 2 holes in front of the anal fin. If the hole closest to the fin is the same size or smaller then the other hole it's a male, if the hole closest to the fin is larger then the other it's a female. Here's a pic of what to look for.

Thanks Magnus! Very help.

The problem here is this is the fish I’m trying to buy. I only want a male not female, but I don’t think the seller is going to vent it for me :))

Ahh yeah probably not then lol. But yeah if I had to make a guess I would probably lean towards it being female. It's got pretty well rounded fins and no signs of a kok on its forehead. Granted appearances can only tell so much.

I felt the same way, based on the shape of body and head, I tend to say it’s a female. Thank you

Beyond venting
To me, the steepness of the cranial profile makes the OPs photo look to be male.
The dark color in the dorsal can be deceiving,
because if a dominant male carpintus is in the tank with a female (of any species cichlid), that dark color sometimes appears as a dominant male trait.

Below is an example.

Left, a lone shot of a male, mid and right shots male is on the right.
The cranial profile on females is much less steep.

Compare the male profile (left) with the female (right)
And a male below (right) with a female (left)
