Help with Stand

Hello fellow DIY enthusiast,

I am after a bit of advise in relation to a 5 x 2.5x 2 Tank and Stand I just purchased.

It is a second hand tank and hold water fine, What i propose to do some mods to the Stand.

Is t OK to put a piece of Ply at the top of the stand where to tank will sit ? I will be also adding some styrene on top of that.

At the moment there is no ply just the timber used to construct the stand, I am wanting to add the ply so as to mount my UV light and power board to the undeside of the tank.

This is the Tank and Stand before I laid my hands on it.

Nice Tank! I agree, what you are planning to do should be fine. I have done the same thing. The stand I had bought had the openingin the center. To prevent my acrylic tank from bowing underneath, I placed a plywood board and nailed it on. Just make sure that the plywood is secured on with nails before you placed your tank on it. Thanks for sharing your tank.

I have screwed the ply in place counter sunk the screws and filled in the holes with putty, It is slowly taking shape.

I have the tank at a LFS he is drilling 2 holes in the back and I am going to plumb it with bulkheads and 25mm Pvc so I can run a sump.

The sump will be a 30 x 16 x 16 filled with Matrix and Bio Balls. I will be running a 3400 LPH Eheim Pump

Have you thought about running scrubbies instead of the bio-balls in the sump?

Hi All,

Well I was able to do a little work on the stand last weekend so I thought I would share some pics, I have mot thought about running scrubbies as I have around 500 bio balls laying around doing nothing so I thought I would utilize them and save some cash.

Stand will getting done in High Gloss 2Pac and the doors will be frosted glass inserts.

Let me know what you all think.

No problem with putting ply down. I have done this on most of my tanks. The big one included.
