Hi, I am new to this forum and kinda new to the fish world. I have two 55 gallon fish tanks one of them is just a freshwater community tank. I would like the other to be a cichlid take but not quit sure how to go about making it one I like Jack Dempseys but I hear that they get big and can get mean so I guess I need to go with african cichlids but I am not sure which ones I can mix togeather I would love it if anyone can give me a little help!

Welcome to MFK. You're gonna love this place. I own both a JD and an African tank. If you want to make it a single specimen tank you'd be hard pressed to find a spunkier, more beautiful fish than a JD. I absolutely love mine. On the other hand, a Malawai community tank is hard to beat. You can't go wrong either way. Have fun!

JDs vary in temperament. I have the most peaceful JD. It might be possible to have a JD in with Africans. They only get 9" max. African experts?

Expert? No, but I DID stay at a Holliday Inn last night. ;) Actually, I've had many conversations about mixing JD's with Africans. The bottom line is they require totally different water parameters, and it isn't advisable. BUT it can be done. I wouldn't recommend it. 9" is still 3" bigger than a lot of the more readily available Africans max out at.
