Help with sump pump

so im building a sump (around 5 gal bucket) for a 55 gallon what kind of pump do i need?

how high is the water going to be pumped? lol any more info about the sump? do you want a submersible pump (one that you drop into the water) or an external pump (one that you have the pipes plumb to it and it pulls the water out that way) but for a 55 gal you want one that can turn over something around the ballpark of 330 gph based on this link: http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/freshwater_tank_wizard.php

Also need to know about your overflows. You need to make sure your overflow can move water faster than the pump or else you will have overflowing tank and drained sump.

about 49 inches hight and i made one like the ones on here

Well, according to the chart on the sticky, 3/4" will give you a max flow of 337 gph from your overflow, so you are going to want a sump that is slower than this. I would recomend either a quiet one 1200 or 2200 if you can limit flow.


Even better would be to redo the overflow with 1"
