Ok, I am a sump noob. I am getting a 180 gallon on Monday. This tank has dual overflows, one in each corner. It has 2 return holes in the center. Basically what I want to know is how big of a sump will I need? Basically I'm asking for a walk through of how to set this up. If anyone can help please explain to me how to do this. This will be my first ever sump and
I don't want to screw it up. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1390008928.797588.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1390008933.051342.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1390008939.030112.jpg

50 gallon or bigger. Bigger the better of course, so go as big as you can afford. A 75 will fit very nicely under the stand.

You def don't need 50 gallon or bigger. I have a 240 and currently have a sump that is 35x12x15 tall. You can stop by and take a look if you want. I also have a 1200gph pump, filters the 240 nice. When the power goes out, it fills up about 5 inches, current water level is 6" so add 5" to that and you still have plenty of room for water.

My sump is 27 gallons.

Jason at Aquatics and Exotics will tell you the same thing. Ask him to show you the sump the runs the salt water tanks on.

Now, bigger is always better but it's not needed if you don't have the room or $$$. You can always go smaller.

Well I have a 40 breeder that I was going to use.

Calculate how many gallons every inch of height your tank holds the determine how many inches the main tank will drop before the drains and returns are above water and you have how much room you need in your sump above normal operating volume. 180/24=7.5 so fof your low point is 3" you need 21.5g of space in your sump to accommodate this water. You can use a check valve and siphon breaks on the returns but it's best not to rely on them if possible.

Use a the 40 and I would run a 900 gph pump out of each overflow that way if one craps out, you still have one running load it up with bio media and you are all set. I ran. 210 and a180 with the same setup. You won't be disappointed.

Ok that's what I'll do thanks! My friend is going to help me set it all up Monday

If the holes in the glass are 1" and 1.5" what size bulkheads do I need to buy?
