Hello,
Im planning on building a plywood tank. I have a glass tank that’s 7x2x3 foot that was given to me by a family member, they have now decided they would like it back. After looking at the prices of a similar size glass tank, I believe I could easily make one for cheaper and I love a little project.

I have decided to go with standard 18mm plywood for the box itself and 10mm acrylic sheet for viewing windows on the front and sides. I have decided to go with acrylic as it is cheaper. this is a temporary tank as I will be building a huge tank or tropical pond some time next year.

So, the tank will be 7 feet in length, 3 feet deep and 28 inches high. The reason for the 28 inches high is that we will be moving next year and I want to be able to fit this tank through my doors in the house when we do move. This tank will then be able to be used as holding tank for sick fish and other reasons once my much bigger build is complete in my new house.

I have seen many diy builds on the internet and im also a carpenter so the box and structure are no problem for me. The things im struggling with is the waterproofing materials. All of the builds I have seen have been in America, im from uk. I really like the look of liquid rubber, its easy to use, non toxic and from what I have seen a monkey could water proof a tank with it. I have seen one build on youtube where a American guy build a tank of similar volume to what im planning using only liquid rubber for waterproofing, his tank had been up and running for 3 years with no leaks. I trust the material but I am just a little worried about the weight of that amount of water using only liquid rubber and no fiberglass to support corners of even covering the whole inside of the tank.

So my questions are:
Has anyone here used only liquid rubber?
Are there any aquarium safe liquid rubber products in the uk?
If I have to use fiber glass, can I use a standard one as it will be covered in liquid rubber or will I need to use a fiberglass safe for aquariums, if so, are there any brands of fiberglass safe for aquariums?
I have heard that silicone doesn’t always stick properly to liquid rubber, but ive also seen cases where this was not a problem. Any advise on this would be much appreciated????

I have searched the internet for the answers but 99% of what I find comes from us. And I need to find the materials in the uk.

Thanks for any help here.

Keeno.
