Bought group of 4 silver dollars last Friday from LFS - two red hooks and two tiger. They only had two red hooks and they were larger than all of the tiger but two of the tiger were large enough to not be food for my Oscar.

Anyway, the two smaller tigers both had white top lips yesterday. I am trying to figure out if this is mouth rot, cotton mouth, or maybe just damage incurred from the quest for food with the two larger red hooks. Nothing suspicious looking on the red hooks at all. It’s making it hard to decide on treatment being unsure. I’m assuming it’s fungus but want to get opinions. Also having trouble finding a consensus on property medication or just using salt.

Here’s best pictures I can muster. Water parameters are as they should be. This is a 125 gallon established over a year.

Could be from rubbing against the glass. Would keep the water clean and monitor. Keep nitrates less than 20ppm. Watch ur water as ur tank isn’t fully cycled yet.

I agree looks like damage. I also agree having 0 nitrate is an issue most of the time, may have something weird going on in your filtration. Doing 50% waterchanges weekly is good but even at that rate of water change if the biological processes are happening you should have some form of nitrate. Unless you have some form of nitrate filter also. I run biocenosis baskets and plants and still register around 5 to 10ppm nitrate on those tanks at any given test.

Thanks - I’m getting zeros I assume based off the fact that I had done a large water change a day before testing, it has to be cycled after a year plus right?

Should i add some salt or medication as a proactive measure?

Thanks as well, level of confidence on damage vs disease/fungus?

looks like he ran into the glass or décor. Silver dollars do that sometimes. I agree with the other guys on here; keep your water quality high, feed them well and watch for signs of a secondary infection.
