So i finally gathered enough money to buy the 75 gallons of water I would need to fill my 55g main tank, 10g sump filter, and 10 quarintine tank. I was in a hurry to fill my tank so I didn't quite rinse my sand well enough. I filled it up with the first 5g bottle and it turned nothing but cloudy, I have decided I am going to let it sit over night and see if it clears up. If not, is there any sort of fish safe chemical I can add to clear up the water? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I made this same mistake and had to drain my tank, take the sand out and wash it. Are you using bottled water to fill your tank, just use tap water.

Wow, Why did you have to Buy Water to fill the tank??

When I got my "Pool Sand", I took about a quarter of the bucket of sand and washed it with a "Water Gun" and then empty out the cloudy water without dumping the sand and started the process again. I did this for about a solid two hours. It took 4-5 times to clean the sand from the "Cloudy Water" from the Bucket (5gallon Bucket) I then added the clean sand to the tank and within about a week, the water was perfect. On my 90g, I did the same thing, but this time, instead of letting the water/tank cycle for a week, I got a Vortex and the water was crystal clear in about a day!

Good Luck with Cleaning your sand, it does take time but well worth it!

No i'm not using bottled water, I do not own an RO unit so I travled to H2O4U, sort of like a culligan but cheaper, I am doing salt water so I don't want to take my chances using my cities water. The town i live in has a HORRIBLE filtration problem so that is preaty much why I bought my water. Do you guys if i bought a gravle cleaner and just cleaned it with that then syphoned out the 5 gallons I put in it would take care of the problem.

Justin, I wouldn't see a problem with that, Kinda a good Idea!

I also didn't know this was a Marine Tank, I thought this was a FreshWater Tank, sorry!

Saltwater...Saltwater..Hhmmmm...isn't that for boiling potatoes? (I live several miles from the coast in florida so making saltwater sounds funny) :grinyes:

Seriously tho, how about a 2 or 3 cartridge filter system for your home water? You can make it portable and just hook it to a hose bib outside. Everything is at HD / Lowes. Should be under a hundred bucks total. (maybe seventy-five w/sales). Hate to hear you had to run out in the middle of the night and find out they're machine is broke. You know that's when these things happen. Good thing it doesn't get cold at night there...

water shoudl clear up what kind of sand are ya using?? where in iowa??
i'm out in the sioux city area, about three hours away from you.
The water did clear up this morning quite a bit, but not as much as I had hoped for, I picked up a gravle cleaner tonight so I will give it a shot tomorrow.
Any body have any ideas as to what i should put in this tank?
I'm thinking a picaso trigger, lunar wrasse, niger tirgger, and a soldier fish. Any body else have any suggestions?

I think the water should clear up by itself in a week just cycle the tank for a week.. you did mention that you rinse the sand.. a newly setup tank is naturally cloudly esp fine sand. No amount of rinsing and cleaning the sand will you insure that your tank will have clear water at once.... :)

I dont think using a gravel cleaner is necessary.. just fill the tank and sump and cycle the tank for a week... im prety much sure the tank will clear up by then... then add one single fish ( a small inexpensive one ) after one week. if fish is ok one week. then you can add the fish you like and later invertibrate( if u plan to )
