Hello, this is my first post, sorry it's in a time of distress, but here it is... I recently started my first planted tank (140gal) to move my 5 red bellies and 1 gold piranha into. I moved the gold first, as he was smallest. Then i ordered another gold from aquascapeonline. He arrived in bad shape, fins tattered, and very inactive. He only wanted to hang out near the surface against the back wall. After two days he had a huge white puffy fungus looking thing sprouting out where his tail meets his body. I moved him to an isolation tank and immediatly started a fungus treatment (pimafix) that LFS recomended. He died the next afternoon. I never saw him eat once, and also he arrived in blue water which i thought strange because the last gold of the same size didn't have blue water. Initially i thought it was a sedative, but then i read:
"1) Malachite green:
(in popular brands like QuickCure and Super Ick Cure): big no-no for live plants (good Tx but hard on fish as well). Note: turns water bright blue, very strong meds that will kill some weakened fish if used at dosage prescribed. "

Is it possble they sent me a fish all ready infected? At first i didnt think so. But, I moved my 5 red bellies in the day before he broke out with that white fungus. Now i am noticing spots on their bodies and around their mouths and fear that my entire planted tank is infected with Flexobacter (Chondrococcus).

I have never had a problem like this before and don't know where it could have come from if not the new gold P, but never the less, I need help. What will fight the fungus and not kill my plants? It is not practical to take the 6 piranha out with out destroying my plants, and i recently invested a fair amount of time and energy establishing the plant life there. Please i need advice!

The blue treatment is most likely methylene blue often recommended for fungal cases. Your case regarding the spots is indeed columnaris. Use furan or maracyn for this case.

Fungus rarely happens and can be mistaken for columnaris although in your case, the pic did show the actual fungus case. It will happen only when the wounds or injuries were left untreated allowing the spores to establish on the wounds therefore developing fungal growths.

I have started using melafix a tea tree extract to treat the water, and tetracycline gel (a food antibiotic) which i am soaking their thawed bait fish in. I noticed that they were slightly more active after applying the melafix, but this may just be them adjusting to the new tank.

this morning one of the white soars has a white string hanging off of it. is this a parasite or further development of the bacterial infection?

a sulfer treatment? i have not heard of this yet, it's safe for plants? can you suggest a specific product?

Keep fish away from other fish then use malachite green f 5 to 10 drops then change 50% water after every 3 days for about next 10 or 12 days.I saw that you have power filter is very good, feed fish 2 times daily and give variety of food . Every thing will be fine take care bye.
