I just recently recieved a black wolffish, and noticed him today breathing hard and gasping at the tank surface... He's been in the tank for 2 days and only started this behavior today. There are 5 various cichlids and 4 bichirs in the aquarium and none of them are exhibiting any of this behavior. I have done a 50% water change to see if that would help, but I was just wondering since he is the only new fish to the aquarium could he still be acclimating, or maybe he has some sort of parasite? Just don't want to medicate the aquarium if not necessary.

Post ur water parameters. Dim lights. Wait it out. Keep in mind wolves and cichlids can be a bad combination and it’s reacting to the tankamtes. Monitor for aggression.

Shipping stress could have led to the development of a gill infection. The delay in symptoms would be about right. Gill infections aren't that easy to treat. I've always let the vets deal with them.

I'll try and post the parameters later, the cichlid aren't a problem though they are a lot smaller than him... he ate a firemouth his 1st night in the tank.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe a gill issue, he almost looks like he has the hic ups.

Kind of like they're "coughing" trying to clear their gills?

In my case, it was Aeromonas, IIRC. None of the antibiotics I tried did anything. The vets used prescription injectable antibiotics. I probably should have tried ciprofloxacin but I didn't know what bacteria I was dealing with.

Yeah, it does look like he's coughing... so I'm potentially dealing with a bacteria? Hmm definitely new territory for me. Is it possible this will self correct or do I have to use the meds? I'm just not a big fan of using meds unless absolutely necessary.

It's possible but not likely at all.
