On Tuesday night I came home and did my routine maintenance on my 29g. I took out my Rena XP2, cleaned it thoroughly (with tank water) and did a nice healthy water change. Well I woke up the next morning to find my water was dark yellow. I quickly did some water changes and it went away. Later that day, after running some errands, I come home to find the water yellow, AGAIN. But this time, there was 5 dead fish along with it. My rainbow shark, bolivian ram, german blue ram, a keyhole, and a cory cat (All, with the exception of the shark, were under 1") were all lying on the bottom with their eyes bulging and mouths open. I did more water changes, and removed an extra HOB filter I had on their. I was sure that was the issue, as I had ran it after the used filter media inside had been dry for quite some time. Now today, I woke up to find the problem had not gone away. I am completely clueless as to why this is happening. I cleaned the intake and outtake tubes on the Rena thoroughly, as well as a good cleaning of the motor and baskets. I cannot figure this out. If anyone has any advice or insight as to why this is happening it would be greatly appreciated.

If the media in the HOB was old and not cleaned, it could have discharged some contaminates into the water. Did you check the parameters?

What do your test kits say? Any ammonia present? Maybe your water conditioner is bad?

Unfortunately I don't have any test kits, I work at a fish store so I would usually just bring a sample in there every once in a while. I know the HOB discharged a lot yesterday, but I removed it and still the water turned yellow this morning..

Would a dirty impeller in the XP2 cause this? The flow rate from the spray bar was normal, but I had been lazy about cleaning the motor until this morning...

something might have gotten in the motor houseing area when you cleaned it the first time. sorry for your lost.

Thanks for the support. It must have been a very dirty impeller, I find it strange that the flow rate didn't seem to be affected by this though..

Hope you get everything running well again. good luck
