Okay, my parents just brought home a 55 gallon aquarium they found on the curb. The glass isn't chipped or cracked and is in good condition. But the border, I'm not exactley sure what its called, has bits and pieces and some small sections missing. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get what I need to replace it. Thank you.

I am guessing that you are referring to the plastic top or bottom trim pieces. If you can get a piece off and measure the it you could do a search for glass tank mfg and contact them to see who has trim that closely matches yours.

IMO you would need the trim.....i had a 55 and didnt notice the trimming cracked on the top during a move, and a couple months down the line i had water all over the floor and saw that the silicone was exposed on the corners and thats when i noticed that the trimming was cracked. if a cracked trimming did this much damage i can only imagine what no trimming would do

Make sure before you set it up that you let it sit outside with water in it for a couple of days. If it'll explode, you don't want it to happen in the house.

The plastic trim on any tank is only for looks.

It does not have enough comparative strength to be considered in the overall strength of the tank.

Any lfs can order bulk trim for your tank. It will be up to you to miter it to fit.

Chompers is right, the trim is for looks, the tank is held together by the SILICONE.

That said, I would never set up a free tank of unknown age and origin without resealing it! I have completely removed trim from tanks without a problem, but this only works on tanks that weren't designed with a brace across the top.

my point exactly, a 10 gal without the bracing on the top would be fine without the trimming. most 55 gals i have seen have the center bracing which indicates to me, it is there for support. with my tank that fell apart, the crack in the trimming was in the back so i couldnt see it but the crack was so bad that it made the center bracing useless
