What the hell does a protien skimmer do, and how do you know if the one you have is sized correctly?, Same questions for wet/dry sump, I hear in order to keep soft corals you need stronger or different lights. Does this mean brighter white light, or different light?, At one time all my rock was purple several layers actually, however now its white, gray, red, etc... I've done nothing different. Thanks J. Velarde.

Protein skimmers remove organics from the water through refraction...if you remove them then they cant take part in the nitrogen cycle...and I think you need both (but I know nothing about saltwater)

really simply they remove protein, (rotten Stuff) through tiny air bubbles created by the venturi of air into the pump. They come sized for your tank, and trust me a good one sized right will remove tons of foul smelling gunk from your water you had no idea was there. initially a lot then as the water gets cleaner less. If i were still doing salt i would definitely have one, I just wish they worked on freshwater. cant help on lighting sorry.
