hi there i was just wondering if anyone could help i have a just bought a red tail x tiger shovel nose catfish he is about 14 to 15inch he as eaten since i bought him a few days ago but he is constantly panting like when watching him it seems like he is struggling to breath I'm wondering if this is normal as he seems fine he swims about and eats but he just seems to be doing a lot of this panting like motion anyone know if this is the norm many thanks Maxine xxxxxxx

well i have done some checks on the water the ammonia and nitrates are fine the pH level is 7.2 the temperature is 77 and the is plenty of oxygen the filtration we use is a flu val 405 the tank is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft and the other fish in the tank are fine its just this tiger shovel nose x red tail catfish hope that helps many thanks
 
I know this is from a while ago. Hopefully your catfish is still with us. But is the tank cycled?

Panting/heavy breathing can be a sign of in adequate water quality or not enough oxygen in the water. But from what you're saying your tank parameters/setup should be fine. If he was only panting right after you brought him home he could have been just stressed and otherwise fine.
