Yes. The thing to be concerned with though is the waste getting trapped in the sand and creating harmful pockets of ammonia. Plecos create a lot of waste and cleanup can be a chore. I have personally taken sand out of two of my tanks that house plecos for these reasons. I just gave a friend a 4" L-205 to put in his planted tank with black sand and after two days he was whining about the poo on top of the sand.

:iagree:

Also something to consider (though I'm not sure if it'll be an issue or not) is if the pleco is large, and the sand is fine, the sand may get stirred up easily and possibly get sucked into a HOB filter (which will ruin it I'm pretty sure).

ok thanks i just put my pleco into my friends tank with the sand and he started floating sideways and hasnt been the same ever since

What are his waterparameters?Any Nitrates/ ammonia?
Was the tank cycled and running before the pleco went in?
Plecos are not supposed to float on their sides.
Don't think it has to do with the sand.
