i have a common pleco and i kno they get big and i only have a 40g long tank so im probbly goin to get rid of it it soon and i was wondering wat i should put in its place to keep the tank clean? some kind of catfish or wat? help please
What other fish are in the tank? Are you trying to get rid of algae?
I usually find algae scrapers, gravel vacs, and water changes to be the best way to keep tanks clean rather than buying a "janitor" type fish because all fish produce of waste which you would have to take out by water changes anyway.
What exactly do you mean by "clean the tank"? Something to eat algae or scavange extra food? Pretty much all of the "tank cleaners" end up producing massive amounts of waste. I would keep the fish if you like them but not because you expect them to clean the tank. Many of the people in this forum (my self included) have lots of plecos in their tanks and while not having any algae is a nice bonus, it's just that, a nice bonus. I have to do a at LEAST 75% water changes weekly to get rid of all the crap that they produce. 'Course, I might have a few to many fish too ! "Not a sermon, just a thought".
agree with jconley really maintanence is something YOU have to do, not a fish. I have a lot of plecos in all tanks, and i still have algae in every one of them. I keep them 'cause i like them, not because they are a "clean up crew".
The best algae clean up is prevention. Figure out what is allowing it to grow, and reduce it. For me I use plants, or low lighting. Plants will choke out most algae by taking up most of the nutrients before the algae has a chance to use it.
