The only thing I can think of is where the water dumps into my socks. Is it the fact that they aren't submerged and that let air in when I unplugged my pump?

I do not have a check valve to prime it but we have a screw cap on the tall piece and filled the whole thing with water I don't see how that would cause it.

Heeeeelp please :)

1: that part where you have the cap (the highest part) needs to have a hole, it's a vent! Not a prime
2: the U hanging over the tank edge needs the check valve to remove air.
3: after the tube loops over the tank, it.goes down and it needs to loop back up via another U, then the T to the vent.

Follow this, and you'll be golden

I didn't realize it was a vent I tried to cheat. At least structurally i made it correct. Will add a cap with a vent hole and put a check valve on the hook over the rim of the tank. I can just use a airline tube and clamp too correct?

There also needs to be a "U" at the bottom of the exterior pipe causing water to flow up beyond the level of the "U" inside the tank to reach the drain. That's what maintains the siphon.
