So I managed to get myself roped into helping a friend fix their work tank and restock it. Tank is a 55 gallon and currently has one rainbowfish. I believe 4 giant danios, 1 Colombian tetra, and a glass cat or two.

Their boss wants something larger and colorful in the tank and I just can't think of anything to go with that mix. I thought severum at first but the tank is just two small for one.

Any ideas? Wouldn't be opposed to getting rid of the danios

As far as I know, the most colorful fish you can fit in a 55 without aggression issues is an electric blue acara.

Was thinking the same thing but didn't feel like spending the money since I owe them a favor I was getting the fish. Plus my LFS has them and they had ich last week so that was a no go lol.

Your only other option would be T Bars or Jewel cichlids, but I've heard that some of them are aggressive.

Well if your going to do T-bars or jewels, you might as well do pretty much any cichlid that stays under 7". Those two are aggressive.
I would recommend if they want color, to re-home (or donate for credit) the current stock and do Mbuna. Pretty easy to find large mbuna for cheap, especially if you look on craigslist there is usually somebody who has some full grown labs and zebras in a 30 gallon or something they want to get rid of. Or you could buy a bunch of the "assorted 3 for 10$" baby mbunas and let them grow.

You could do dwarf rainbows in that tank with some other fish like Cory catfish and maybe some red rams, they look amazing. I would trade in the fish you have right now.

Have you considered some of the Gourami species?
Some grow to around 6 inches are peaceful enough and come in bright blue or orange.
You could probably add one to the current stock without issues.

Bingo. So that's what I did yesterday. They did not want to get rid of the existing stock so I ended up adding a few flame gouramis since they wanted more fish then just one bigger one. The flames looked nice and added some color to the tank.

Glad that's done an over with lol
