These three closely related jewels are the biggest growing of the jewels and are predatory. This guys can be mean and some people say pound for pound they are the meanest cichlid, but thats up for debate, The guys as do other west african cichlids have similar conditions to Sa and Ca cichlids and many people often keep them together. I myself have fallen in love with this beast of a cichlid and its seems like not to many people have them. I would like to know does anybody else on mfk have these five spot jewels as they are often called or have kept them in the past. If so which ones do you have and post pics if you have any. I myself had a breeding pair of Elongatus but now i have 50 or so fry growing out and i have one male Fasciatus , i have never keep Frempongi but i will soon.

Not even close..How about you put in a male aurutus with a jewel cichlid. the male auratus would shred it into pecies!! I have a 200 gallon african cichlid tank, and my male auratus rules the tank..even when the jewel's are breeding!!

that was not the point of this thread i was trying to find other people that has keep these type of jewels and what type of jewels do u have in your tank

Auratus shred a grown male fasciatus? I beg to differ - a grown male fasciatus (7"+) is more than capable of handling an adult auratus (4-5"); they can tangle with the bigger mbuna baddies like chipokae, kenyi, etc that are more comparable in size/aggression. Never had any problems keeping H. fasciatus with any of the aforementioned species of mbuna, they were target fish to keep my male/female fasciatus from killing each other when they weren't spawning. Perhaps your elongatus aren't as nasty as some of the ones I've kept but if they're pissed off, the damage they can do to other fish (usually each other :() within seconds is just unreal.

i do not under estimate any of five spots my are just more passive then others i have had in the pass they paired i had got beat on by a pair of sals but ruled everything else then been with , i have not had frempongi but i have a single Fasciatus and he is a terror i was able to keep him with a much bigger grammode that killed everything but him , grammode stilled ruled the tank but did not kill the fasciatus just chased him from time to time
