I haven't been able to find much info on Hemichromis fasciatus (banded jewel cichlid). All I keep reading is that they are really mean. How big do they get and would one male do well in a tank by himself? Do they have much personality?

H. fasciatus is one of the most aggressive of all Cichlids. They get to around the 10-12" mark and will rarely accept tankmates when full grown. If they are the established fish in the tank then the idea of adding tankmates is shot in the foot, in my experience. I have had a few of them and I would put there aggression second to none. I had a 4" male that killed and ate the eyes out of a pleco who was 6" and lived with the Jewel since he was 1.5". These guys make T. buttikoferi look like pansys. They have alot of personality and will charge and flare at you when you approach the tank. I havent seem them available for awhile do you have a source for Fasciatus?:naughty:

Mike's Killer Fish had one a couple of weeks ago and it has already sold.

Fasciatus are intolerant of anything if they(fasciatus) are big enough to challenge it & slow enough to catch. The tankmates would have to be an aggressive CA/SA cichlid as no african can match the fury. Yes 1 solo male will look nice but these are so few & far between you'd do better breeding them. the irony if once you get a pr. keep other fish on the opposite side of a divider so the pr. will keep trying to kill them & not each other. They will breed These are the largest hemichromis.

Hi Fish Friends,

I found someone with a bunch of babies for you. http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/index.php?threads/hemichromis-fasciatus.13219/

His online name is cornbread_5 and this was his message.

Ok my pair has breed and I have a whole lot of fry , I am located in Connecticut so if anybody interested in some let me know not really trying to ship but may ship later asking 7 a piece they are small so you may want to wait until they get bigger.
