Hemichromis fasciatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I first saw them in the late 70s, early 80s, but soon after that they seemed to disappear.
They lost favor quite a few years ago, because when put in a community tank, they usually killed all other fish, even those much bigger than themselves.
Or if put in a species only tank, one usually killed and ate, even as a juvie, all its brothers and sisters.
For years they were also confused with H elongates (AKA the 5 star general) that has a similar disposition.
They reach about 10" (the Nile river location variant) and many aquarists were put off ending up with one 10" fish in a large tank,

Yes that is why I'm looking for one. I don't see any hope in putting one in a community and breeding can be difficult with these guys so I want a single male. I plan to grow one out in a 75 and upgrade if needed. I have heard of them reaching 12 + inches. Their aggression is comparable to a dovii.

The rub comes in, because so few people want them, so they aren't intentionally collected, or if they would come in, they would be a contaminant in a shipment of other species.
I have for years wanted to get my hands on Serranochromis angusticeps, (or any other of the genus for that matter) but because they are large, and not wanted by many aquarists, I'd have to just happen to walk in when there was an errant one in a shipment carton. But because they would either eat or kill all fish in the shipment container they would usually be removed, and eaten by the local collectors first.

Wet Spot has frempongi. Similar size, almost identical in appaearance, prettier fins, not completely psycho like fasciatus, although still pretty mean.

Also, I as well would like to try serranochromis. Especially the big green one that people fish for like large mouth bass.

Yeah I’m aware and may end up taking that opportunity but I am looking for fasciatus. I’ll have to look into Serranochromis. I have never heard of them as I am just getting into the west Africans. I have only ever owned some jewels.

Get ahold of Will Lujan on FB. He started a group called Hemichromis 5 spot jewels on there. I bet he might have some. There is a single fasciatus down here at a LFS that is a F1 of a wild pair (lake Volta) I bred a couple years ago. I don't think they ship but if you get desperate, I ship fish and could probably go get it and ship it to you.
