Is there a way to distinguish between the several types of jewels that look like elongatus? (Fasciatus, elongatus, and what else? )

A store near me (two in fact) have some of these - BIG GUYS, about 5 inches, and I REALLY want to pick out a pair, but cannot sex them. Is there a surefire way to sex these bad boys? (and bad girls!) They basically look identical at this point, and the fish are overcrowded (species tank) so no pairs have shown up yet. It's been a while - so I'm getting tired of waiting and I don't want to purchase more than two. They are not cheap.

A few of you are from the area and you may have seen them... they are at Tropical Lagoon (right name???) on Georgia Avenue / Route 97 south of the beltway in MD.

yep, it's not that hard the elongatus have a five spots on there side hench the five star general name , now the Fasciatus are the mosast robust of the three and tend to have red blotches on them, with a scatered pattern of black, the 3rd being the frempoi, or spelled something close to that, usually has the most red of them all, if you google them, and look closlys , you should be able to know what the store is selling especially if it's a five star general

So it's just those three that look like this?

I checked out some photos - looks like fasciatus has more like bars, instead of spots? Sound accurate to you?

The store ones most likely are elongatus then - Can they be sexed?

yep, so far it's just the big three, but they r finding hemichromis types all the time, some just aren't nice looking enough to be worth importanting,

The tough two to tell apart are frempongi and fasciatus. They look very similar. The snout on frempongi is more pronounced and they have 5 very distinct spots without any peppering of black dots between them.
