My buddy just called and told me that his 12" male henlei died. The fish looked in perfect health except for these marks around his claspers does anyone know what these marks are?

That looks like the crazy fin rot bacteria that was going around. I had an outbreak of it. I had to go bare bottom and treat with Binox (nitrofurazone) for a month with a temp of 85 degrees to get rid of it. This stuff is the reason I stayed bare bottom. Sorry to hear this
IMO the wounds appear to be ulcerations. Caused by abrasive surfaces (abrasive substrate). The sepsis from infection most likely killed the ray.
