Just wondering about these guys.
How large of a tank would be need for a trio?
I'm guessing 180?
I've heard a single could be kept in a 75?
I was thinking of putting it in with some polypterus...

Any info on these guys would be great.
:)

Cool fish. One of my favorite characins. Personable, impressive predators but pretty easy to get them off live foods.

They do fine alone, but if you're going to keep multiples you may want to do more than 3. I've heard they can be quite aggressive towards others of the same species and in a small group the weaker ones will gradually be picked off. But I've seen pics of tanks with fairly large schools.

A 75 would be ok but probably a little small. They grow over 12" and are pretty quick, so you want to give them some room so they don't crash into walls.

Polypterus are great tankmates for them. They do well with most things large enough not to get eaten. Just avoid other shiny silver fish that resemble them.

Awesome.
I might try it out.
I could always sell it or move to elsewhere if it seems uncomfortable in the 75.

Not sure what exactly I'm going to stock the 75 with if I get it.
Quite alot of options I have and so many cool fish!

a longer tank would be better but you could get away with it for a while they can get quite big over 24'' but don't usually in captivity and are said to be short lived in captivity people say they won't live past 5 years in aquariums but some have

polypterus would be good tankmates if they were big enough

Only thing to mention is to only get one and no other top dwellers they hate other shiny silver fish and fish the same shape long a skinny polys are fine for some reason mabye cause of there color and cause they stay on the bottom most of the time

I've heard they can sometimes do well with Xenentodon cancila?

I'm just trying to figure out what else would do well with it besides polypterus.
What about an BGK?

Would make a cool african themed tank, Hepsetus, some nice polys(I'm thinking 1xornate, 2xendli?) and a BGK.

So many fish I want!

I thought X. cancila were brackish?

Mine did fine with a BGK... but BGK aren't african ;) I was also a little worried that it was sometimes eyeing the white tip on the BGK's tail.

Mine was also fine with a large african brown knife and various, polypterids, catfish and peaceful cichlids. It grew very quickly and eventually tried eating some small clown loaches.

Awesome.

I just wish a 75G would be big enough for an African arowana, that would be a killer combo!

I'm trying to think of cool african oddballs that would do well with the Odoe.
So far I'm thinking 1x ornate, 1x del, 1xendli, possibly some more polypterus if theres room...

needle fish are light to mid brackish and would most likely be killed by an odoe

for a 75 don't get an endli there the biggest polypterus (26''-28'' can reach 30'' and thicker then a soda can) if you like the look of the lower jaw species a lap would be better they will eventually out grow a 75 but it would take a while

like said black ghosts are south american african brown knifes are a little small and clowns are too big so not sure about an african knife for a 75

i would try a large centopoma in there or get all the other fish small and the cetopoma as big as possible

African brown knives max out at about 12'', I might try it with a divider near by.

I think I'm just gonna go for the Odoe, del, ornate, lap, and possibly a rope or two.

Also, I've looked for some info, but couldnt find any one some of the smaller polys such as Buetokkoferi?(I just horribly butchered the spelling of that)
