Here is the tank! 35 African Cichilds. Two Penguin 350s and 1 FX5 filter!! I was wondering how I would go about changing the gravel to sand on the bottom. Is that really hard to do at this point?

Can I add the sand while the fish are still in the tank? And what type of sand is the best to use?

pool filter sand is a popular choice...get a 5gal bucket and do like 1/4 bag per bucket. turn off filters when adding sand too just so there is less disturbance while adding

btw pool filter sand can be ordered and shipped to Ace hardware stores and is like $12 per 50lb bag

Looks great just do me one favor and change out the substrate for sand in natural color. I will bet anything you will like it even more. And the fish love moving the sand around.

If you came get a medium grain sand that won't get kicked up into the filters easy.

I want to put sand in instead. Do you know any links to medium grain sand. I have an FX5 filter so I don't want to damage it. Is a natural color sand just tan sand? I am looking online now for sand.

if you have air stones just shut the filter off for a couple hours while the sand settles, thats what i do, i use sand from caribsea and it settles out fairly quickly.

then no worries about damaging the filter

The Gravel is out and the Sand is in!
