I know I can use house-hold salt instead of the over priced salt at the LFS...but does it matter if its iodized or plain morton's?

you cannot use iodized salt....kosher salt can be used in a pinch

I've been using the iodized salt for a few months now. No difference. I bought both today in hoping that I could use the right one.

The large cans of API salt are 4 dollars at petsmart. Food salt has stuff in it so that it doesn't clump. Aquarium salt and marine salt do not. The crystals for aqarium salt are too big to stick together, but marine salt definatly does clump in high humidity. Dissolves right away once it is in water again.

Damn man, talk about teasing me. When my last gf offered a quickie I knew she wasn't talking about salt :naughty:

It got me to read the thread though!

The iodine will kill fish faster than you can say WTF!

I killed my fish using deionized morton salt (Florida saltwater natives). I don't have the factual information what was in it that killed them but I was told that morton seriously changes the pH to deadly levels. I never tested this so I can not say for sure. Also morton salt does not have the electrolytes that sea water does. Sea World holds 1 1/2 hour workshops on how they make their salt water. They do not just add salt. Look up their website; maybe they have that info posted.

I use epsom salt in all my tanks. Its like 2.98 at wally world for a pretty good size bag.

I do not remember what chemical epsom salt is but it is not sodium chloride. If it is used as a substitute for saltwater fish, I would not want to be the owner of the fish.

I use Mortons sea salt non iodized, large granules that I p/u at walmart NM.
works well .use only when acclimating new fish in the holding tanks or for treatment purposes...PH 7.0
