Here's an update after "the attack"

I had an alligator gar for 2 days....he was about 13-14"....and he kicked the $h1+ out of my fish......needless to say...he had to go. They are recovering well. ALOT OF MELAFIX AND SALT. I did manage to find him a good home.....but the thought of cutting of his alligator head did cross my mind.

The casualties:

BATF: bottom half of tail was GONE.....now it's growing back red... ODD? He was showing flesh on both sides and lost alot of scales.and blood... as u can see he has made almost a full recovery in 3 weeks.

Tat: Tail destroyed....like shredded drapes...he could barely swim. Right pectoral fin REMOVED.

Armatus: Deep wound to the stomach....bottom muscle tissue showing. Blood loss. Dorsal fin 75% removed.

M.Carfi: loss of fluid in the eyes, loss of sleep.

but IMO it was a stupid thing to put an alligator gar with all those silver fish...

i had a couple gars of that size when my fish were your size long time ago in a heavily planted predominant atf/payara cohab tank. didn't do the due diligence research and thought the gar wouldn't try fish they couldnt swallow. So wrong. Fish went missing or gashed over span of couple weeks but didn't think they did it, cos I think it happens at night. Wasn't until the meter long gar newly aquired started chomping more koi than they can swallow in the pond that I realized. Lost a juvi VATF, GATF and several small ace to those gars...

My payara including the armatus have gotten gashed but they heal up just fine. ATF are very resilient and also will be fine. I've had $hit luck on tats so wont comment there.

It did happen with the lights off............a very stupid thing to do, I was nervous about it, but I really convinced myself it would be fine. A hard lesson learned. Gar are nasty dudes.

Glad to hear all is well

Im sure you know but it will probly happen again. The Armatus growth rate passes all the other tankmates by a Ton.

BATF and Tat combo would be a SWEET sight to see past 12"

Also, if Im not mistaken, the gator is the reason why they are illegal in some states. Almost every other gar is very very peaceful with tankmates as long as it dont look like a snack

Try a Tropical Gar... cool dude IMO

gars aren't nasty, it's this kind of instances which give them a bad name. it's like putting a dog with a cat and calling the dog "nasty" after it craps on the cat. gars just do not go with small silver fish. really, do the necessary research next time. kudos on getting the characins back to health thou
